Harvest Moon Cow plush pattern

Description

A sewing pattern for a Harvest Moon cow.

Anyone may freely use this pattern to make a cow for themselves, and for other people. You even have my permission to sell cows you make. You don't have to credit me, but it'd be nice. The only restriction is since I made the pattern, I ask that no one claims the pattern itself as their creation, or try to reproduce the pattern for money.

EDIT: I updated the pattern to improve the body shape.

I recommend fleece for this project. You can use felt for the spots, hooves and horns, but everything else would be easier to make with fleece. (It will also look better). Minky will also work.

 Cow Pieces

Cut 2 mirrored body pieces out of white
Cut 1 of each body spot out of black

Cut 4 horn pieces out of gray, 2 mirrored
Cut 1 muzzle front out of pink

Cut 1 muzzle back out of pink

Cut 1 body gusset out of white

Cut 1 outer ear out of white

Cut 1 outer ear out of black

Cut 2 inner ears out of pink

Cut 8 hooves out of gray, 4 mirrored

Cut 1 udder out of pink

Cut 1 front head out of white

Cur 1 front head spot out of black

Cut 2 back head out of white, 1 mirrored
Cut 1 back head spot out of black
Cut 1 tail out of white

Cut 1 tail top out of black

(You can obviously use whatever colors you like to make any color cow, but these are just suggestions)

I find it easiest to start by matching your cow’s spots onto their respective pieces. The pattern provided serves as a guide to spot placement, but you can also opt to place the spots as you wish or even make your own spots!

Hand stitch or machine stitch spots into place.

Attach the hooves to the body pieces as well as the body gusset piece. Again the pattern shows how the hooves fit with the body pieces.

Now let’s deal with the darts! The notch in the front head is a dart that gets sewn together. (If you don’t know what a dart is, look up a tutorial with pictures or video, because that will explain it better than I can in text).

The body pieces have a dart at the butt area that need sewn up.

The udder has 4 darts to sew up.

The muzzle front piece has 3 darts that need sewn up

The body gusset has one big diamond shaped dart and 4 oval shaped darts to sew. Fold the fabric along each dart and sew it up.

With all that done, now we can attach the gusset to the body pieces. The gusset has one long end and one short end. The short end should face with the neck side of the body, which is the side WITHOUT the butt dart. The long end of the gusset is aligned with the butt dart side. The long end will end at the top of neck. The short end will end before you can reach the top of the neck. This creates an opening at the end to turn the body right side out.

Turn the body right side out through the neck hole. To balance out this cow’s big old head, it can help to weight this plush by adding poly pellets in the feet. Alternatively, you can use weighted fishing lures in the body or any other long lasting heavy thing.

Sew two horns along the curved side, leaving the straight side unsewn. Turn right side out and stuff lightly.

Sew the white and black outer ears to a pink inner ear, leave the short straight side open. Turn right side out.

Muzzle front can be attached to front head along the straight side.

Sew the two back head pieces only along the gently curved side. When you open up these pieces, the outer edge should look like the front head piece.

Attach the muzzle back to the two back pieces along the straight side, leave a space unsewn in the middle of this straight line to leave a space to turn the head inside out later.

Now we’re sewing the front head to the back head, matching white fabric to white fabric, black fabric to black fabric, and pink fabric to pink fabric. You can choose to sandwich the ears and horns in between these layers to attach the ears and horns securely into the seam OR hand stitch the ears and horns onto the head later. It’s your choice as to your preference and ease.

Turn right side out through the whole you left at the back of the head. Stuff head and ladder stitch the opening closed.

Sew the black tail top piece to the white tail piece. Clip the straight lines along the bottom the white to create the tail fringe. Fold tail in half and sew along the long side of the rectangle. Turn right side out. The black part of the tail attaches to the body. Hand sew to butt.

Hand sew the udder to the underside of cow.

Hand sew the head to the body covering the open neck hole.

Eyes and nostrils can be painted, embroider or appliqued on. Totally up to you!
